Getting Started in Survive the Swarm

First join, Wave 1 HUD, first dash, and the first upgrade pick — without guessing the UI.

Getting Started

Survive the Swarm is a free Roblox experience from GeekOut Studio. You spawn as a survivor-like fighter, weapons auto-attack while you move, and every level asks you to pick an upgrade. This page is the first session only: join, survive Wave 1, read the HUD, dash once on purpose, and take the first level-up without panic-tapping. For the full loop, continue to How to Play. For kiting when the circle closes, use How to Survive.

The game released on 3 October 2025 and was last listed as updated on 20 August 2026. Servers hold up to 60 players. You can run solo in a quiet server or share an arena. Either way, insects aggro as a swarm, not as a polite one-on-one. Keep distance. Circle the pack. Do not sprint through the middle of the blue cubes on your first life.

First join on Roblox

Open Survive the Swarm from the Roblox page (place 138955781346212) or from the GeekOut Studio group. The experience is free. Optional Robux can double some end-of-run rewards later; you do not need that purchase to learn Wave 1. If you have friends, join the same server — the cap is 60 — but treat extra players as extra bodies that can steal your kite line, not as a shield.

You start with a starter sword. It auto-attacks. You do not hold a fire key to make the first swings happen. Your hands are for movement, dash, and the occasional prompt some footage labels E ATTACK!. If you stand still to “aim,” the insects close. Move first, then look at the HUD.

Redeem anything current after you understand the UI, not before. Codes live on the codes hub. Official Discord, group, and Twitter sit on wiki links. Skip that until you have finished one short run; a code will not teach you the dash pip.

Wave 1 and the HUD

Studio footage shows a consistent top bar. WAVE N sits with a countdown timer — Wave 1 is the teaching round, and later clips show Wave 22 with the same layout. Beside or below that you get an HP bar. Wave 1 opens at 100/100. Later in a run the same bar can read 116/120, so maximum health is not frozen at the tutorial number. A LVL label and XP bar sit nearby; one Wave 22 clip shows LVL 7, which is a useful reminder that levels lag behind wave count. You will not be maxed because the timer hit 22.

Purple crystal pickups drop on the arena floor. Walk over them. They feed the XP bar that opens the upgrade panel. Leaving a trail of crystals behind you while you panic-run is how people stay under-leveled into dense waves.

Bottom-left is the loadout: several weapons at once, each with a level number. On minute one you may only see the sword. That slot is still the same widget you will stare at when boomerangs and Machine Gun appear. Top-right shows currency. Right side lists purchasable powerups: Team Invincibility (30 seconds, cost 49) and Stun All Enemies (30 seconds, cost 49). Do not spend 49 on Wave 1. Save the shop for a surround you cannot dash out of — the how to survive page covers that timing.

First dash

Dash is Shift or Space on PC, with a cooldown pip on the HUD. The pip is the whole skill. Dash through a gap, then keep circling. Do not dash into the pack to “feel fast.” Studio direction is keep distance from attacking insects. If the first dash dumps you into red cubes, you used it as a sprint, not as an escape.

Mobile uses a tap UI for the same actions. We do not invent extra mobile buttons that footage never showed. If you are on a phone, find dash and movement first, then ignore every other icon until Wave 1 ends. A longer input list lives on controls.

First upgrade

When the XP bar fills, a level-up choice appears. That is the survivor-like heart of Survive the Swarm: pick an upgrade every level. On the first pick, prefer something that helps you stay alive while the sword auto-attacks — range, another projectile, or a sustain option if the panel offers it — over a greedy damage-only click you cannot evaluate yet. We do not publish fake stat sheets. Read the panel, take one option, and get back to circling. The upgrades guide explains how in-run picks differ from weapon levels on the loadout bar and from the 49-cost shop.

After the first upgrade, finish the wave instead of wandering. Rewards scale with how long a run lasts, so a clean early death is worth less than a messy Wave 8. Leave the run when you understand the HUD, not when you are bored. Then look at weapons so you recognize boomerangs (yellow and red returning shots on official screenshots) and Machine Gun when they show up. Heroes from other worlds unlock later; Mage is the named kit that trades HP for damage, and she is a poor first-hour buy if you still walk through packs.

First-run checklist

Confirm these before you chase high waves or Trenchline:

  1. You moved while the starter sword swung on its own.
  2. You read WAVE, HP, LVL, currency, and the two 49-cost powerups.
  3. You dashed once on Shift/Space and watched the cooldown pip refill.
  4. You picked up purple crystals instead of kiting so wide you starved XP.
  5. You took one level-up and returned to circling, not to standing still.

If all five are true, you are done with onboarding. Next reads: How to Play for the loop, maps for pillars as kite posts, and the loadout checklist before a longer session. Compare later buys on the tier list, best heroes, and builds. Studio notes on new tools live under new weapons. A turret was announced in January 2026; it is not your Wave 1 homework.

The first session is not a high-wave clip. It is proof you can leave Wave 1 with 100 HP still making sense, a dash pip you respect, and one upgrade you chose on purpose. Everything else on this wiki assumes those three habits.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Survive the Swarm on Roblox.

What should I do first in Survive the Swarm?

Join the Roblox experience, move so the starter sword auto-attacks, read the Wave 1 HUD, dash once on Shift/Space, then take the first upgrade. Details are on this page; the loop continues in How to Play.

Do I need Robux to start?

No. Survive the Swarm is free to play. Optional Robux can double some end-of-run rewards. Learn Wave 1 and the dash pip before you spend anything.

What does the HUD show on Wave 1?

WAVE with a countdown, HP (100/100 at the start), LVL plus XP, purple crystal pickups, a bottom-left weapon loadout, top-right currency, and 49-cost Team Invincibility and Stun All Enemies. See controls for input.

When should I buy Team Invincibility or Stun All Enemies?

Not on Wave 1. Each costs 49 currency for 30 seconds. Save them for a surround you cannot dash out of, as explained in How to Survive.

Which hero should I unlock first?

Learn the starter sword kit first. Mage hits hard and drops HP faster. Compare options on best heroes after you can kite without walking through the pack.

Where do I go after the first run?

Open How to Play, then weapons and upgrades. Redeem codes once the UI makes sense.
